Norman M. Fox was born on July 28, 1919, in Brooklyn, New York, to Russian immigrants Isador Fox and Pauline Sirgutz Fox. He was the youngest of three boys and the only one born in America. After attending City College in NYC, he was drafted into the Army during World War II. He participated in an elite training program at MIT in Boston and served honorably in the Pacific Theatre, including in the Philippines, New Guinea, and Japan.
In 1947, Norman married Eva Rudin, and the couple moved to Saratoga Springs, where they started a business on Broadway. The Fox Family has been in business for over 70 years. Norman played a significant role in the community as a businessman and leader. He was one of the founders of the Downtown Merchants Association and the Special Assessment District. He served on the City of Saratoga Springs Planning Board as Vice Chair and received recognition for his efforts from The Pillar Society, The Rotary Foundation, and The Starbuck Award.
Norman sold the business to his son Harvey in 1978, allowing him to pursue other interests such as buying and selling properties in downtown Saratoga Springs and founding a mortgage banking business. He was a multifaceted individual with a passion for various interests. In the 1950s, he started a record company, Spa Records, with F. Charles Adler, a conductor with the Vienna Philharmonic. In the early 1990s, he donated an illustrated book collection to Skidmore College and endowed a lecture series.
Norman passed away on February 26, 2016, at the age of 96. He left a lasting impact on the community and is remembered as a true renaissance man with a wide range of interests and accomplishments.
